First BREEDTECH Student Training Workshop in Italy Strengthens Global Capacity in Plant Genomics

First BREEDTECH Student Training Workshop in Italy

August 20, 2025

From 5–9 May 2025, the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA) in Pisa, Italy, hosted the inaugural student training workshop under the BREEDTECH project—(Erasmus+ Grant No. 101128862). The event, part of Work Package 3, focused on enhancing educational and research capabilities in plant breeding and biotechnology.

Eight students from Kenya and Palestine—representing Laikipia University, Egerton University, An-Najah National University, and Al-Quds Open University—participated in the program.Led by expert trainers from the Institute of Plant Sciences (ISP) and SSSA, the workshop delivered an intensive curriculum combining theoretical lectures, laboratory training, and case studies. Core topics included:

  • DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis
  • Genomic data analysis and high-throughput sequencing (Illumina and Oxford Nanopore)
  • Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) using TASSEL software
  • CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing
  • Genomic prediction and transcriptomics

The collaborative environment encouraged peer-to-peer learning across diverse academic and cultural backgrounds. Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees praised the relevance to their research, the high quality of instruction, and the strong practical components.

“This workshop represents a major step forward in our mission to equip the next generation of scientists with advanced skills in plant genomics,” said [Insert Name, Title, BREEDTECH Coordinator]. “The knowledge gained here will directly support agricultural innovation in partner regions.”

Participants received certificates of completion along with training materials to continue applying their skills in their home institutions. The workshop marks a significant milestone in BREEDTECH’s commitment to strengthening plant breeding and biotechnology capacity across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
